Bula!!! That's hello in Fijian. And cheers. And bless you.
11 hours later...we made it! Flight actually went by pretty quickly. We slept most of the way and ate like kings. Advice from the Fijian flight attendant:
-Don't chase wild boars because you'll get lost in the woods
-Fijians don't date, they get married right away so be careful who you get close with
-If you want to pierce your tongue, drink lots of kava; it makes your tongue numb
Fiji is beautiful. We had a two hour scenic drive from the airport in Nadi to our resort on the Coral Coast. There's one main road that runs along the south side of the island and one main road that runs on the north side of the island. No traffic lights. There are mountains in the distance and rainforests in the middle. People stand along the side of the road and "hitchhike" to work or take a bus/van. Work is either something in the tourism industry or harvesting their crops. There are wild dogs, horses and cows but that's about all for animals. Lots of frogs and bugs.
We're staying at the Mango Bay Resort in a hut on the beach. It's about 90 degrees during the day and 70 at night. We have a private beach and can kayak and snorkel. The food is delicious. Some days we have electricity and water and the toilets flush...other days not much. Also they don't really believe in soap and I'm 99% sure the hand sanitizer is vodka. Today we layed (what is the proper form of that word?!) on the beach, played some volleyball, then hung out in the pool. Tough life! Good news is I'm no longer pasty white...bad news is I'm burnt to a crisp :-/
In keeping with my goal of doing something that scares me every day (cliche, I know)...yesterday I boarded a plane across the world and today I ate fish cakes. Success!
It's pouring outside now and there are hundreds of frogs hopping around. Tomorrow were going fishing and then visiting another island to cook the fish we catch. Exciting!
