01/13/2012 - Beware of Falling Coconuts!!

We survived our first night in the hut!! Karina and I escaped with no mosquito bites...mike was unfortunately not so lucky.

#fijiproblem #1: SPF 15 does not protect against sunburns

#fijiproblem #2: the stairs are very slippery when wet! Found that out the hard way...twice :-/

#fijiproblem #3: death by falling coconuts! Watch where you walk!!

Last night our bonfire got rained out, as did our fishing trip today. So instead we wove some baskets out of huge leaf branches! And by we I mean Karina and I...our instructor told Mike he looked like a lazy guy so he made it for him. See karinas post for pictures. We also explored our beach for a while...scary thing for today: holding my first hermit crab!!

Wise words from a Fijian: "We have nothing, but we are the happiest people." So true. They live in tiny huts along the road and most don't have any cars. The "wealthy" Fijians make fires along the road and cook for their less fortunate neighbors. Most don't even wear shoes. More on this after tomorrow's trip to the village.

Fijian men wear skirts! Maybe it's cooler because it's so hot here? I'm not sure but I'm glad they embrace their femininity. We ate cassava today for lunch...it's made from tapioca plants that grow all over the country that our van driver Simon told us were marijuana plants. What a guy. Kinda tastes like potatoes. Delish!

On another note...three cats and a bird just wandered into our room. Wonder where they came from??
