1/16-1/18
My watch strap broke yesterday so I am officially on Fiji time and only know if it's morning afternoon or night!
I love cheese twisties! A better version of Cheetos! (Alexa disagrees...Jax all the way. They have chicken twisties...who puts chicken in their potato chips?!?)
We are writing a joint girl post! As with most of my posts mike was not present for the following...
We had our first real night in Fiji that didn't involve bed at 9pm. Also happened to be the same night a group of 10 (loud) Aussie men arrived. The plan was movie night but the projector or something was broken so the activities director said there would be "fun games" instead. After dinner mike hit the hay and Alexa and I hung out with our female Aussie friends about to play UNO when the activities guy came over and said "all you girls up! Go on stage for the game!" little did we know we were about to lose all dignity. He introduced us to the room which was now full of everyone who just ate dinner and the group of Aussie boys and brought out mats for us to kneel on. Then the kitchen staff brought out dishes of vanilla ice cream and the guy yells "ice cream eating contest!!! No hands!"
Alexa recently commented on how we were boring due to jetlag etc and didn't have enough stories....the ice cream guy must have read her mind! After a lot of ice cream in the face and cheers from the crowd Alexa won for America!!! (alexa: these girls clearly didn't know they were dealing with an ice cream eating champ) (did she have less ice cream in her bowl to start? Maybe but still she won since none of the rest of us even finished...I didn't try too hard if we are being honest) our champion was promised a free drink for winning which she never got...we will have to investigate this.
Luckily our time in the spotlight was over. Next he pulled a few Aussie men on stage (which he only referred to as idiots haha) and had the group of "idiot boys" chug (or skull) a beer without hands! Lots of spilling... In retrospect I was happy with the ice cream!
Side note: it doesn't seem possible for us to spend 3 months in Australia and nz and not return dropping f-bombs every other word! They are intense!
Let's flash forward to last night! We taught everyone flip cup!!! Now we are def the minority here being the only 3 Americans in a resort full of Aussies and kiwis and nobody wanted to be on team America...it was team Australia and the new zealanders were indifferent/wanted a 3rd team. I'm starting to love them. I was able to win them over quickly by pointing out that at least team America was not team Australia! Everyone likes a common enemy right? So they joined us and the few kiwis on the other side said they were going to lose on purpose so team Australia couldn't win!!! Serious rivalry!
Clearly we dominated and it was a great time followed by some swimming (Alexa had no choice in that matter as the idiot boys pushed her in) and I think the best time was returning to our dorm and talking to the kiwis back there! They gave us this awesome tablet called baracka to put in water to prevent hangovers! Unfortunately mike was already asleep and was forced to suffer the consequences the next day.) We were rooming with one guy with 6 girls and he kept calling mike "Boston Boy" and asked why he was always asleep and saying things like "if it was the world vs America for sleeping you would win!" he was 33 from nz with 4 daughters and never left the country before. He said meeting us 3 Americans was like meeting the queen of England! He never imagined it would happen! He walked around a lot yelling Jesus Christ and upset that he was so pissed (pissed means drunk)! It was very amusing! Also mike slept through a lot of this conversing and the kiwi guy was very close to shaving off one of his eyebrows! Razor in hand close. Lucky for mike he has such good friends and currently has 2 intact eyebrows. I also informed the kiwis that we don't think of ourselves as yanks or Yankees (Yankees suck!) so hopefully the word will start to spread!
We are learning there are a lot of differences between American and Aussie men. Some good some bad. It's nice to always be greeted with "hi ladies" or "hi gorgeous" vs America where sometimes getting a "hello" is hard. American men don't try to pet or lick our faces though so that we can do without. very open. Very honest. It's mostly a lot of fun!
New words are also fun ! Sunnies and bathers...we started a rumor that Americans say flippies and swimmys.
A big fuss was made bc Alexa hadn't heard of a meat pie/we don't eat them in America...what are we england? Also a fuss since we hadn't heard of this famous Australian guy who was an outlaw and nobody else could really explain why he was significant. Australians are funny about their history, we have been able to piece info together through about 6 different sources. They cant always tell us Basic things like the story behind Australia day or how many states/territories there are or what there is in the capital. It's funny but we get a lot of "I dunno but it's important." or "it's not really interesting unless you like history or doing stuff." I gotta say the boys knew their stuff so they explained these things to us, the girls didn't seem too concerned with knowing these things about their country. Then one girl tried to guilt trip us for not knowing where st Augustine was ("you know somewhere between new York and Miami") (sidenote -- where is st augustine? Florida??) so I was sure to point out that she couldn't really talk considering she was the one who couldn't name all 8 states/territories in australia to us. Also when we asked what the difference is btwn the territories they said "I dunno...the name." haha. Politics are also something not really talked about which is fine but one of the kiwis asked for us to explain the difference between republicans and democrats! I think Alexa and I did a pretty good job! I made an effort to be accurate and not just biased :)
Last night was prob the worst night for sleeping. The air was so humid my hands felt wet without water...it was so hot and rained on and off. Too much humidity everything felt damp and sticky and smelled! Gross ... Also the bar is out of vodka so this is perfect time for us to move on and start to conquer Australia! Its currently pouring as i write this from the bus to the airport. We were sad to leave our friends but plan to see them again in Perth. Otherwise I think we are all ready to say goodbye to Fiji. I can't wait to wash my hands with soap and brush my teeth with water in a regular basis. And to sleep indoors. And to have a normal shower. And to eat different food!!! That's the best part. I am much less of a lobster today, Alexa is peeling unfortunately but she is very tan and mike too! I am both nervous and excited for a country full of Australians! Emma told me to be careful though and reminded me that I am stupid to use SPF 15 so I appreciated the wake up call :) glad so many people are following this blog! Thanks for reading guys we miss you!
Ps we are in the airport waiting to leAve but delayed due to rainstorms and the power just went out...sweet! We will never leave Fiji...:(
